Humor has a NEGATIVE effect on social media!

Humor has a negative effect on social media, as it can be used for bullying and dark jokes. Unfortunately, humor is another way that bad people can treat others poorly over the Internet, mainly on social media platforms. Humor has been used regarding serious situations like 9/11 and the New Zealand terrorist attacks. People try to make light of these situations with humor, when that is the last place humor should be used. Humor has also been used to make fun of the way people look or act. Humor in these situations can very easily cause people to be offended and upset at what is being said. This could hurt the self-esteem and mood of people who are the targets of the jokes. When people are forced to think about negative parts of their lives, like for example, a sad event, they forget about the positive parts of their lives, bringing their mood down. Social media can be another way for bullies to put others down.

The main problem with humor on social media is that it can be misunderstood. The intention of a statement from the person making the joke can be completely different from the interpretation that is made by the person receiving the joke. When someone on social media makes a joke that is not supposed to be taken seriously, the person on the receiving end could very easily take it seriously and be hurt.

An example of the misinterpretation that can happen with humor on social media is the situation with Frederick County Public Schools on Twitter. A student tweeted at their account telling them to cancel school due to snow. The account replied to the student, in which they made fun of the spelling in the student’s tweet. People that saw this tweet felt it was disrespectful and not funny. The woman who sent the tweet was fired, and the school had to apologize. Humor has no place on social media, as people take advantage of it.
