About

The topic of discussion on TheDebate is humor and its role on social media. Anyone who participates in social media can see that humor has a presence. Some social media platforms are better designed for comedic content, and therefore have more humor throughout the platform. An example of this is Vine, which was a social media site where users would post 6 second videos. This site produced a lot of comedians that turned into worldwide stars. Some people even used humor on Vine to propel their own careers. An example of this is Andrew B. Bachelor, who goes by the username “KingBach”. He became the most popular comedian on vine, which helped him get more casting roles in movies. Clearly, people like KingBach use humor on social media for positivity, as they provide entertainment for others.

Social media has grown massively since its beginning in 1997. In 1997, there was one recognizable social media site, called Six Degrees, but now there are hundreds of platforms that can be used. A 2018 Global Digital Report found that the number of social media users in 2018 was 3.196 billion, which was an increase of 13% from 2017. Obviously, as social media grows and continues to grow, humor’s role on social media will continue to grow as well.

Now, the question is: What is humor’s impact on social media? Does humor have a positive impact on social media, a negative one, or is it neutral? Millions of posts are made every year that involve humor, with some using that humor for positive purposes, and others using it for negative purposes. This topic discusses whether social media would be a better place if humor were removed entirely. Humor has such a large role on social media, that if it were to go, social media would be vastly different. But, some might argue that would be for the better.
